Mother Yarham Passes Away
Died at the home of her son, William J. Yarham, in this city, on Monday afternoon, April 12th, Mrs. Emily Yarham, aged nearly sixty-five years.
Mrs. Yarham’s maiden name was Emily Digby. She was born in Norfolk, England, June 23, 1833. She was united in marriage to Mr. George Yarham in the spring of 1857, and immediately afterward sailed for America, settling first in Canada where they resided for ten years, moving from there to Illinois, where they lived for over a year.
In 1868 they moved overland to Jasper County and cast their lot among the good people in the neighborhood of the College Farm or Wittemberg.
On the 19th of February 1892, Mr. Yarham died. Soon afterward Mother Yarham’s health began to fail, and from that time she has been an invalid.
The family moved to town soon afterward, where her sons engaged in business, and she made her home with William J. During all her long illness she had been the special care of her youngest daughter, Minnie, who has watched over and tenderly cared for her mother with all the warmth and affection of a dutiful, loving daughter.
Twenty-eight years ago Mrs. Yarham united with the Congregational Church at Wittemberg, and became a member of the Newton Church when she moved to town. She was a pious, devoted Christian woman, almost worshiped by her children, and respected by all who knew her.
She was the mother of six children all living; Chas. H., Wm. J., Frederick D., and Minnie E., residing in this city; and George A., in Brooklyn, Ia., and Mrs. Mary Dongall of Elmwood, New York.
The funeral services were held in the Congregational Church, Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. C. Harrah, after which the remains were taken to Wittemberg Cemetery and laid to rest by the side of those of her husband. ~ The Newton Record Friday, April 16, 1897
