A Fatal Mistake
We learn from parties at Lynnville the particulars of a sad affair which occurred near the village on Saturday morning February 25 which resulted is the death of an aged and highly respected citizen of Lynn Grove - Mr. H. H. Whitlock [Hiram Higley Whitlock].
The old gentleman arose from his bed between three and four o'clock in the morning to take a dose of cough medicine, and without striking a light, went to the shelf where he kept his medicine and by mistake took a large dose of carbolic acid which had also been left on the shelf. The poison was so deadly that within a few minutes it had accomplished its fatal work.
Mr. Whitlock was nearly 88 years old.
The funeral took place on the Monday following and the body was interred in the Old Settlers Cemetery near Lynnville. ~ Newton Journal; 9 Mar 1887
