Grandma Whitehead, who has been failing for some time, quietly passed away from earth on Friday, February 19.

The funeral took place the following Monday afternoon from the home.

The deceased, Maria Whitehead, was of English birth and was born July 8, 1805. She would have been ninety-two years old had she lived until the coming July. She has lived in this vicinity for many years, residing on a farm south of town until after her husband’s death, then, with her son, she removed to town, where she continued to reside until her death.

Her children, Walter Whitehead of Kansas, Mrs. Annie Hankins of Nebraska, Mrs. Reed of Pittsburgh, Pa., and her son Fred, with whom she lived, were all present at the funeral.

Rev. J. M. Tool officiated at the service, after which she was laid to rest beside her husband in the Monroe Cemetery. ~ The Newton Record Friday, Feb 26, 1897
