Last Rites Said For George Wertz

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at the Smith Funeral Home for Mr. George Wertz, 95, of Rte. 2, Kellogg, who died early Friday morning (Jan 15, 1971) at Grinnell General Hospital.

The Rev. Willard Reynolds, minister of the Newburg United Church of Christ, officiated at the services. Music was provided by Mrs. Donald J. Renauld, organist and Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Sharp, vocalists. Pallbearers were George Milligan, Duane Phillips, Lloyd Phillips, Darrell Wertz, Phillip Wertz, and Wayne Wertz.

Burial was made in Hickory Grove Cemetery.

The son of Jerome and Fannie Hummel Wertz, Mr. Wertz was born July 11, 1875, in Mariposa Township, Jasper County, Iowa.

On March 13, 1901, Mr. Wertz married Anna Bell in Newton. To this union three sons and four daughters were born.

Mr. Wertz lived near Kellogg for a year and later farmed southwest of Gillman for 16 years. After 1918, he lived south of the Hickory Grove Church and for the past 1 1/2 years he had made his home with his son at Kellogg.

Survivors include his eight children - - - Leslie Wertz of Kellogg, Elmer Wertz of Gilman, Lyle Wertz of Laurel, Mrs. Mckinley (Elsie) Milligan of Montezuma, Mrs. Viola Koger of Kellogg, Mrs. Milo (Mildred) Phillips of Searsboro. Mrs. Roy (Rose) Bickel of Coggon, and Mrs Leon (Doris) Yokem of Madison, Ala.; 20 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Mr. Wertz was preceded in death by his wife Anna in 1969 and by four sisters and two brothers. ~ Grinnell Herald
