Almost Ninety-nine Years Old
Wells, Jane Maria (Frazier)Old Grandma Wells, probably the oldest person in Jasper County, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Troub Clutter, at 10 o’clock last Saturday morning, Aug. 19th, age ninety-eight years, ten months and seventeen days.
Grandma Wells’ maiden name was Jane Maria Frazier, and was born in Salem, Mass., October 2, 1800. On the 3rd day of July 1827, she was married to Thomas a. Wells, and to them were born two children, a daughter who died in infancy, and a son, William Wells, still living in Union County, Ohio.
She and her husband lived in Vermont until his death in 1830, since which time she has been a widow. She made her home with her niece, Mrs. Troub Clutter, for many years in Ohio, and came with them when they moved to Iowa in 1878, continuing with them until her death.
For several years she had become as a child, requiring the constant care and attention of Mr. and Mrs. Clutter, who have watched over as tenderly as if she had been their own mother. For years she has enjoyed her second eyesight, having been able to read everything without the aid of spectacles. Aside from the natural infirmities of old age, she has enjoyed good health up to the hour of her death her life going out like a lamp whose oil has all been burned.
She had been a member of the Baptist Church for over sixty-nine years a blessed Mother in Israel who has only passed over the “border land” to claim her inheritance as a reward for a long life of faithful service for the Master.
The funeral services were held at the Clutter home, northeast of Newton, Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. C. Hanna, after which the precious old body was laid gently to rest in the Wittemberg Cemetery. ~ The Newton Record Thursday, August 24, 1899
