Remains will be Brought to Newton for Interment by the Side of his Father, Mr. Samuel Vaughan.Vaughan, Arthur
Our community was shocked on Wednesday morning by the telegram bearing the sad news that Arthur Vaughan had been killed in a railroad accident, the evening before, at Buffalo Gap, S. Dak.
The brief telegram gave no particulars beyond the fact that he had just started for Chicago to buy goods and had reached that point, only about fifty miles from his home, when the fatal accident occurred.
Arthur was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Vaughan, and was born and reared in this city, only leaving here a few years ago to enter into mercantile business at Whitewood, S. Dak., where he has been very successful. Before leaving Newton, he was for some time associated with John Rea in the dry goods business.
He is a nephew of J. J. Vaughan and has a large circle of relatives here who are deeply grieved over his untimely death.
He was about 38 years of age, a young man of bright intellect and moral worth, and was suddenly stricken down in the minds of a brilliant and successful career. He leaves his wife and two children, besides a widowed mother and one sister to mourn his loss.
The remains will be brought to Newton for interment, and will probably arrive Saturday morning accompanied by his wife, mother and sister.

Obituary of Arthur VaughanThe funeral of Arthur Vaughan who was killed in a railroad accident at Buffalo Gap, Dakota, last week, was held at the Congregational Church Saturday. The announcement of the death of Mr. Vaughan came as a great blow to Newton people for he was a man just in the prime of life, prosperous in business and with a family and happy home. Tuesday afternoon of last week Mr. Vaughan left his home in Whitewood, South Dakota, for Chicago, where he intended to buy fall goods. He was riding on a stock train which had stopped at Buffalo Gap to get coal. It was just after leaving this station that the awful accident happened. By some mistake another section of the train was allowed to pass the station just after the first section had left causing a rear end collision in which it is supposed Arthur was killed instantly as he was riding in the caboose which was totally demolished.
Mrs. Vaughan and two children arrived with the body Friday also with the remains of two children, a boy and a girl who died with whooping cough at their home in March last and whose remains were laid to rest beside that of their father.
Thomas Arthur Vaughan was born in Newton June 8, 1860. Here he grew to manhood removing to Dakota in 1888 (?) where he has been in the dry good business. He was married to Miss Alice Tremble in
(Illegible). Four children were born to them, two yet surviving, little Isabel and Henry Arthur. The bereaved mother and wife has the sincerest sympathy and may the heavenly Father watch over and protect the fatherless little ones. ~ The Newton Herald, Fri 17 Sept 1897.
