Jacob Trevits Dies of Paralysis in Des Moines

Trevits, Jacob

Jacob Trevits died quite suddenly last Friday, at the Morgan House in Des Moines, his death being the result of a stroke of paralysis, which occurred on Tuesday.

Jake, as he was familiarly known, had been in feeble health for some time on account of heart trouble, and had spent some time at the mineral springs in Colfax.

On Tuesday of last week he went to Des Moines, and must have been attacked just after he left the cars and reached the Morgan House, as he staggered into the hotel, and could only articulate the one word “Kellogg.” He was taken to a room and cared for and a telegram sent to Kellogg stated the facts.

A nephew from Kellogg immediately went to Des Moines and cared for him until his death of Friday. He never regained consciousness.

Monday morning the remains were taken to Kellogg and from there to the home of his sister, Mrs. Geo. Frizzell, a few miles in the country. The funeral services were held at Hixson Grove Chapel, Tuesday, conducted by Rev. James Kirkwood, assisted by Rev. Rouze. The Kellogg Masonic Lodge, of which deceased was a member, had charge of the exercises at the cemetery.

Deceased was born in Hancock County, Ind., May 24th, 1843 his age being 55 years, 8 months and 17 days. He has been a resident of Jasper County since 1855. His father died many years ago and Jacob took charge of the old home farm in Buena Vista, caring for his aged mother until she also passed away about seven years ago. He never married and since his mother’s death has spent most of his time in Kellogg and Colfax. He leaves one brother and three sisters: John Trevits, Mrs. Ben Wheeler, Mrs. Geo. Frizzell all of Buena Vista Township, and Mrs. Catharine Mace of this city.

Jake served three years in the civil war in Company L, 9th Iowa Cavalry, and was a member of the G. A. R. post at Kellogg. He was a good man and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him.
