Charles Poulson Dies at Baxter

Charles Poulson, well known resident of the northern part of Jasper County, died Wednesday, June 24th at the home of his brother, Will Poulson at Baxter following a lingering illness from paralysis.

Mr. Poulson was taken ill several years ago and spent many months in a Davenport sanitarium in an effort to regain his health. About six weeks ago he was removed to the home of his brother, Will Poulson at Baxter where he later died.

Mr. Poulson is survived by his mother, Mrs. Nelson Hurst, of Valeria, three brothers, Will Poulson of Baxter, Jess Poulson of Sherburn, Minnesota; Lester Poulson of Valeria, and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Schwab of Roundup, Mont.

Funeral Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Will Poulson home at Baxter, Rev. G.C. Williams of Newton officiating, the service being in charge of the I. O. O. F. lodge of which Mr. Poulson had been a member for many years. Burial was in Greencastle Cemetery.

Charles Poulson was born near Valeria, Iowa, Oct 2, 1883 and passed away at the home of his brother, Will, near Baxter, Iowa, June 24, 1925 at the age of 41 years, 7 months, and 22 days.

With the exception of a few years, his life was spent in Jasper County. Twelve years of this time having been spent in Newton during which time he joined the ranks of Odd Fellows, later obtaining the degree of Canton and remained a faithful member to the end. To this order he gave freely of his time and money and was ever ready to help a brother in need.

Six years ago his health failed and he was obliged to give up his work in Newton, but later bought and operated restaurants in Valeria and Mitchellville. His health still failed him and he was forced to enter the hospital at Davenport where he remained for two years. In all of his sickness and during all of his suffering Charley was so patient and kind and appreciative, always thoughtful of others and never wanting anyone to do more than was necessary. He was of a sunny, cheerful disposition, always looking on the bright side and was hopeful to the last.

He was converted over two years ago and was baptized by Rev. Rarrick while he conducted services in Valeria.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Hurst; three brothers, Will of Baxter, George of Sherburn, Minn.; Lester of Valeria and one sister, Mrs. John Schwab of Roundup, Montana; also a host of friends and other relatives. One sister, Mary and a brother Ed preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of his brother, Will near Baxter, Rev. Williams of Newton conducting the service. The Canton had charge of the services. Burial was held at the Greencastle Cemetery. There were many beautiful floral offerings.
