Died at Mt. Pleasant, Wednesday, January 23, James R. PoagePoage, James
James R. Poage was born in Ross County, Ohio, Sept. 3, 1834. When he was twenty-one years of age he removed with his parents to Illinois, and in 1857 Mr. Poage came to Jasper County, settling on a farm in the neighborhood where he has since resided.
He was married in 1859 to Harriett E., daughter of Robert and Mirandy Scott. To them were born nine children, eight of whom and the mother survive to mourn the loss of a kind, affectionate husband and father. The children all live near the home farm north of Newton, except a son in Baxter and another son in Melbourne.
The deceased was a pioneer in this county and has been prominently identified with its material and social progress. He has been honored by his neighbors by election to positions of honor and trust in the township. A man of strong convictions and devotion to duty, he united with the Free Presbyterian Church, in early life, on account of his belief in the wrongfulness of slavery. After the close of the war, and slavery no longer existed in our country, he, with his fellow church workers, united with the Congregationalists, and the deceased was a charter member of Wittemberg Church, of which he continued a member until his death. He was a good citizen, a kind father and a loving husband.
Mr. Poage became ill in mind a few days before his death and was taken to Mt. Pleasant for treatment. The Superintendent of the Asylum writes that Mr. Poage's death was "directly traceable to grave organic changes in the brain due to disease of the blood vessels."
The remains were brought to Newton on Saturday, and funeral services held Sunday at Wittemberg Church, Rev. Durant officiating. Interment in the church cemetery. (Wittemberg Cemetery)
