Death of Mother Phelps

Phelps, Hilay S.

Mrs. Hilay S. Phelps died at her home in Sherman Township on Tuesday evening, November 2nd, at the ripe old age of seventy-nine years.

Mother Phelps was born in St. Laurence County, N. Y., October 14, 1818. She was married to F. E. Phelps July 18, 1833, and moved to Ohio in 1850, and from there to Iowa in 1866, settling on the farm, five miles west of town, where her aged companion died about ten years ago, and which continued to be her home until her death.

Mother Phelps was a kind hearted, lovable old lady to whom young and old alike loved to do her honor. She had been a zealous Spiritualist for years and died a firm believer in that faith. She leaves three children Mrs. Vincent of Des Moines, F. R. Phelps of Indiana, and Alfred, the youngest, who with his family have made their home with her for years.

The funeral services were held at the Sugar Grove Church on Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock, the only service being an address by Andrew Engle very appropriate and full of encouragement and consolation to the bereaved friends. The body was laid to rest in the Metz (Sugar Grove) Cemetery.
