Died At Davenport Nov. 4Nancy Ellen Caldwell Durbin was born June 25, 1844 in the state of Indiana. Came to Jasper County, Iowa in the year 1853 with her parents, Elijah and Nancy Caldwell, settled on a farm 4 miles west of Newton. In June 29, 1860 she married to Scott H. Durbin and lived in the same neighborhood for thirty years, since living in different places but all in the state of Iowa.
In 1862 her husband enlisted in the Civil War where he spent three years, during the time he contracted an injury which resulted in his death April 7th, 1893, in Newton; where she lived until her five children were grown, Minta, the oldest, being at that time 15 years; Howard 13; Esther 11; Roy 9; and Eva 4.
The past few years she has made her home in Davenport. Her first obligation was to be a true and loving wife until her death; her second was when she accepted Christ as her Savior, united with the Baptist church along with her husband in April, 1862; Her third obligation was to direct her children in the right. She did what she could God being her helper. (The foregoing is copied from her own writing, written Jan. 12, 1909.)
Departed this life Tuesday, November 4th, 1913, after a two days' illness aged 69 years, 4 months and 9 days. She is survived by her five children, Howard, Roy, Esther and Eva Durbin, all of Davenport, Iowa, and Mrs. Belle Ramsey of Hutchinson, Kansas, and two brothers, S. M. Caldwell of Akron, Colo., and E. M. Caldwell of Cartersville, Mo.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Metz church with interment in Sugar Grove cemetery. ~ The Newton (Iowa) Daily News, November 6, 1913.
