BARNEY OSWALT, CIVIL WAR VETERAN CALLED WAS ONE OF THE ONLY TWO VETERANS REMAINING IN THIS VICINITY.

Barney P. Oswalt

Barney P. Oswalt one of the only two surving war veterans in this vicinity passed away Tuesday morning in his home in the Oswalt neighborhood northwest of Colfax. Mr. Oswalt had been seriously ill for several days and previous to that had been failing in strength.

He was 92 years of age in September and for 50 years lived in the vicinity of which bears his name. Some thirty years ago coal was discovered on his land and a large mining town grew up there, known as Oswalt.

After the coal was depleted, the tracks removed and the people gradually moved to other locations as they found work. While there are no business houses, the name Oswalt still clings to this neighborhood. He was influential in the success of many undertaking there these years. Both he and his father served their country in the Civil War, and many a thrilling tales he and his comrades told about their days in the service.

He is survived by his wife, three sons, Mike of Olmitz, Jake of Des Moines, Mid of Colfax and one daughter, Mrs. William McKeever of Colfax.

Funeral Services will be held this morning (Thursday) at the Cutter-Hartnett undertaking Parlors at ten 0'clock with L. C. McDonald officiating.
