Obituary of Mrs. A. J. Osborn

Osborn, Rebecca (Inman)

The death of Mrs. A. J. Osborn, which occurred at her home about 6:30 o’clock last Wednesday evening, removed from our midst one of the early settlers of Newton and one of our best and most highly esteemed ladies. Just one week before, she had a fall, at the time apparently of no consequences, but a few hours later she was stricken with a stroke of apoplexy, which was evidently a result of the fall. She rallied from the effects of her first illness, and seemed to be getting along nicely until Wednesday evening, when a second stroke of the same dread disease came and her life went out forever. Her death carries sorrow not only to her children, but to a large circle of friends who had known and loved her for many years.

Mrs. Osborn’s maiden name was Rebecca Inman. She was born near Reynoldsburg, Ohio, March 19, 1828, where she grew to womanhood, and was married October 15, 1846, to A. J. Osborn. In the spring of 1855 they came to Iowa and settled in Newton, which had been her home all the years since. Mr. Osborn died July 24, 1896. They had four children, Charlie died April 29, 1879, and Minnie passed away Sept. 30th, 1885. Frank E. Osborn and Mrs. Kate Bradley, both of this city, survive the mother. Mrs. Osborn was a woman of unusual intelligence, loveable in her disposition and made friends of everybody. She was devoted to her home and children and was a noble Christian mother. In her early days she was a member of the Presbyterian Church, but for many years has been an attendant of the M. E. Church, when health would permit, although not a member. She leaves one sister, Mrs. Mark Evars, of this city the only one remaining of a family of six brothers and sisters. The funeral was held in the M. E. Church on Friday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. C. Willits.
