Mr. Neal Murray, an old resident and a veteran of the war of 1861 died at his home south of town Saturday morning. Mr. Murray was just 72 years old and was only sick a few hours.

Neill Murray died at his home near Vandalia, November 17, 1899. He was born in Butlin County, Pennsylvania, February 27, 1827.

He was married in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, to Arabella B. Wallace, September 18, 1849.

Five children were born to them.

They migrated to Iowa, landing in Vandalia, April 9, 1855. Mrs. Murray died May 3, 1895. On May 7, 1896, he was married to Nancy J. Noon, who survives him. His five surviving children are W. M. Murray, R. F. Murray, both of Runnells; Charles Murray, Mrs. Josh Wicker and Mrs. R. T. Anderson, all of near Vandalia. His brother, John Murray and his sister, Mrs. Glenn were here from Kansas to attend the funeral, conducted by Rev. L. H. Bufkin of Runnells.

On the 28th day of September, 1861, he enlisted and was commissioned by Gov. Kirkwood to recruit a company. After recruiting part of a company, he consolidated with Dr. Ault, of Newton, Iowa, who was recruiting a company which was mustered in as Co. 22nd, Iowa, infantry volunteers. Neill Murray was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant, and served until 1863, when he was wounded.
