Death of a Veteran old Settler

Murphy, Hugh Montgomery

Died, at his residence, near Monroe, Iowa, April 15, 1895, Hugh Montgomery Murphy, aged seventy-two years.

Mr. Murphy was one of the oldest settlers of the county, having come into this section in 1851. He was born in Knox County, Tenn., in 1833, and removed, with his father, to Iowa in the year above mentioned. He settled first year near Pella, but in 1857 removed to Jasper County, and purchased a farm four miles north of Monroe.

In 1861 he enlisted in the army under Capt. Miller, at Newton, Iowa. Miller's company incorporated in the 13th Iowa, which became a part of the famous "Crocker's Brigade." Mr. Murphy was in the service little over a year, participating in the battle of Shiloh and the engagements around Corinth. Here he contracted disease, which afterwards had much to do with his death, and he was honorably discharged in October 1862.

He was married April 23, 1963, to Caroline Dowler, and a year later removed to the farm he owned at the time of his death, where he resided over thirty years. In 1892, he retired from active management of his farm and removed to a small farm, which he purchased near Bellevue Church. Here he died very suddenly, on the afternoon of April 16th.

The funeral services were held at the church, near his home, and the largest audience ever assembled there testified their respect and regard for the deceased. Eight of the old members of Co. B. of the 13th, J. B. Eyerly, D. S. Stover, Henry Kilsel, B. Battels, J. L. Mathews, John A Seaton, J. R. Wheeler and Geo. B. Hunter, all of Newton, Iowa, were at the funeral and acted as pallbearers for their departed comrade. The remains were interred in the family plot in the Monroe Cemetery.

Mr. Murphy was a man of the most exemplary Christian character, and, sudden as the summons was, he was prepared to go. He had been almost a life-long member of the M. E. Church, active in its work and contributing freely to its support. He commanded the universal respect and esteem of the community and his death is mourned as a personal loss by all his neighbors.

His wife and four children survive him, for whom his careful thrift has well provided, leaving as he did a considerable estate.
