Olive Mae Johnson Miller

Mrs. Olive Mae Miller, 80, of the Metz area southwest of Newton, died at 7:10 o'clock Sunday night at Skiff Memorial hospital in Newton. Her husband, Melville Truman Miller, Metz retired farmer had died at 8:18 o'clock Saturday morning in the hospital. Both deaths were due to the infirmities of old age.

Double funeral services will be held at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the First Lutheran church in Newton. Rev. Fred D. Boldt will officiate. Burial will be in the Sugar Grove cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. Miller would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary Feb 1. They were married in 1893 in Des Moines and had spent their entire married life near Metz.

Mr. Miller was well known in Jasper County. In addition to farming he had operated a creamery, grain elevator and store in Metz and had been a livestock buyer. He had also mined copper in Mexico and had been employed by the state of Washington for a time before his marriage. He was a member of The Daily News Three Quarter Century club.

The son of George W. and Emily Helphrey Miller, Mr. Miller was born May 26, 1861 in Sherman township. He attended the Jasper county schools, went to business college in Burlington and attended Hazel Dell academy in Newton. Mrs. Miller was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Carnaby Johnson. She was born July 26, 1868 in Lucas county. She had received her education in the Jasper county schools.

The Millers are survived by two daughters, Bertha, at home, and Mrs. A.G. Hauge of Route 4, Newton, and one grandson Claude Hauge of Route 4, Newton. Mr. Miller is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Clara Brock of Newton and Mrs. Elmer Emmack of Metz, and a brother, Clarence I. Miller of Metz, while Mrs. Miller is also survived by a sister, Mrs. C.C. Bruce of Route 4, Newton. Mrs. Miller's brother, William A. Johnson, and a son, Donald, preceded her in death.
