An Afflicted Home

Mendenhall, Amanda (Myerley)

The death of Mrs. William Mendenhall, which occurred at her home in this city, last Thursday morning, Aug. 4th, brought great sorrow not only to her husband and children, but to a large circle of relatives and friends throughout Jasper County.

For many years she had been a patient sufferer from a painful disease, which for the last year of her life confined her to her bed almost constantly. Although racked with pain, she never murmured or complained but was always cheerful and by her sweet influence made her home pleasant and her loved ones as happy as possible.

She leaves a husband and three children, two daughters, Ella and Delia, and a son to mourn the loss of a wife and mother. The son, Bert, is a soldier in Company L, 50th Iowa, stationed at Jacksonville, Florida. He had been very sick in the hospital with typhoid fever, and it was impossible for him to come home. During her last hours her mother-heart turned to her boy constantly and her great desire was that her life might be spared until she could see him once more.

Mrs. Mendenhall’s maiden name was Amanda Myerley. She was born Feb. 6, 1852, in Huntington County, Penn. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Israel Myerley, moved to Davenport when she was but an infant, and in 1855 they came to Jasper County where she lived until her death. On the 2nd day of July 1872, she was united in marriage to Mr. William E. Mendenhall. She was a member of the Friends Church at Kellogg for a number of years, but after moving to Newton she united with the M. E. Church, and was an earnest, faithful Christian woman.

Funeral services were held in the First M. E. Church at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. V. Cowan, and was attended by a large concourse of friends. Mrs. Lou McCown of Peterson, Miss Lorena Condon of Greenfield, Ed Condon, Mrs. Dr. Beck and Miss Lizzie Adair of Des Moines, besides many relatives from Kellogg and vicinity and Ira were in attendance at the funeral.
