The Newton Journal, November 2, 1904
Elizabeth (Beck) Mather

Elizabeth Beck was born in Virginia, November 29, 1826; moved to Ohio when five years old. She was married to Daniel Mather, February 4, 1846, and lived in Ohio until 1854, when she moved to Winneshiek county, Iowa, and from there to Jasper county, in 1868. There was born to them ten children; three have died, leaving seven to survive her.

She united with the M.E. church when but a small girl, and remained a faithful, earnest member until called from her labors to her reward. She was left a widow October 7, 1898, but notwithstanding her loneliness as a widow she did not lessen her efforts to bless the world in a service of faithful Christian life.

She died October 22, 1904, aged 77 years, 10 months and 28 days. The funeral was held in the Mt. Zion church and was largely attended; she was then laid to rest in the cemetery nearby to await the call of Him who said, "I go to prepare a place for you, and if I go I will come again and receive you to myself, that where I am ye may be also."
