Sweetly Sleepeth a Loved One Called Home

Manning, Bessie

[Bessie, youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Manning, died at the residence of her father, 3 ½ miles southwest of Newton, June 19, 1895. She was born September 27, 1882, and at the time of her death was 13 years, 8 months and 22 days old.]

Grim death has entered our family and selected for its victim our most loved one. A child of great promise, and one so universally loved and respected by all who knew her. As a daughter, never causing her parents unnecessary trouble, she was very dear to the hearts of father and mother. As a sister, she was affectionate and loved.

From father, mother, brother and sister, so dear, she received prompt careful attention and most tender and faithful care. Her disease baffled all skill and she gradually grew worse. Fond hopes were entertained of her recovery but it seemed to be otherwise ordered. During the latter part of her illness she suffered much, yet patiently and submissively; although she was cheerful and hopeful, anxious to recover if it was the Lord's will, feeling that she had so much for which to live. We all thought that she could not long survive, but she lingered a few days and at times held beautiful conversations with her friends. At the very last she was conscious. Wednesday evening just as the sun was setting in the west, she passed away quietly and peacefully. The funeral was held Friday morning. The grave was lined with snowy white intermingled with white roses and sprays of evergreen. The body was interred in the Catholic (Sacred Heart) Cemetery.

Bessie leaves a father, mother, one brother and sister. We are all very sad. We are all made to mourn as we contemplate that one so young and yet so beautiful should have a life so brief. But we mourn not as those who have no hope, for she believed in Jesus. She sleeps with Him. She is with Him.

Little Bessie sweetly sleepeth,
In the Churchyard cold and dim.
Be He whom all His children keepeth,
Hath called her spirit home to Him.
