Death of Father McCarty
McCarty, James C.

Mr. James C. McCarty, after a protracted illness of over five months, died at his home four miles north of town, last Sunday morning, Jan. 22nd, at ten o’clock, aged eighty-one years, three months and ten days. Father McCarty was known as a good man conscientious in all his dealings with his fellow man, honest, upright, genial and sociable with everybody, and of course was very popular with young and old.

He was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, October 12, 1817, where most of his life was spent. In June 1850, he was united in marriage to Miss Esther Mason, who still survives him. Seven children were born to them, five still living: Thomas, Eugene and John, all of this vicinity, James of Adair, and Mrs. Ella Scarbrough of Woodward, Ia. The family came to Jasper County from Pennsylvania, in the Fall of 1881, and purchased what is known as the Uncle Johnny Vanatta farm four miles north of town, which was Mr. McCarty’s home until his death.

The funeral was held at the home Wednesday at 11 o’clock a. m. conducted by Rev. Arnold, pastor of the Wittemburg Congregational Church. The large attendance of friends at the service proved how highly Mr. McCarty was esteemed by the neighbors and among whom he had moved for so many years.
