Death of Peter Lust
Lust, Peter

Peter Lust died at his home about six miles east of Reasnor, on Thursday April 7th, 1898, at the age of sixty-seven years, seven months, and eighteen days.

Father Lust was born August 19, 1830, in Hessen Darmstadt, Beerfeldan, Germany. At the age of fourteen he came to America with his parents and settled at Columbus, O., where he was married in 1848 to Kathrine Kammerer. To them were born 9 children, 8 of whom survive. His wife died on the 24th of May 1873, and in June 1874 he married a second time to Mary Phifer, who with his children and grandchildren mourn the loss of a kind husband and affectionate father.

From 1856 until the day of his death Father Lust was an esteemed citizen of Jasper County, Iowa, respected by a large circle of friends. For more than forty years he lived a consistently Christian life, always ready with his voice and work to aid in every good cause. He was brought up in the Lutheran faith but for years he has been a member of the M. E. Church.

A large concourse of people attended his funeral at Tool’s Chapel, last Saturday, April 9th, Revs. Wilson Dunlavy and Klooster conducting the service. Another good man has passed to his reward.

Over in the cemetery
There they laid to rest our father
In his low and silent bed.

Oh how hard they tried to keep him
But with them he could not stay.
It was Jesus whispered softly “Come up higher, come this way.”.

Then he crossed the shinning river
Drifted with its silver tide.
Now his troubled here in is over He is safely on the other side.

Holy angel stood and watched him
As his spirit homeward fled.
Met him at the gates of heaven Placed a crown upon his head.

Oh, companion look to heaven
As your heart with grief doth swell
Do not murmur but remember Jesus doth all things well.

When you anchor in the harbor
When your pilgrimage is o’er
Your companion and father then will meet you As he often did before.

Wife and children dry your tears
He sees you from above
He anxiously awaits you coming To dwell with him in realms of love.
