I. Raymond (Ray) Long, 81, of 706 E. 24th St. S. died of cancer and complications of congestive heart failure Thursday, Oct. 11, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center and the Rev. David Wendell of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements. Friends may call today at the church where the family will be available from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Skiff Medical Center's Surgical Waiting Area Remodeling Fund.

The son of Isaac Raymond and Idella Mac Hammons Long, he was born Oct. 7, 1920, in Silver City. He lived in Newton since 1942 and served in the United States Army during World War II. On Feb. 6, 1949, he married Edna M. Brunner in Newton. He was the surgical waiting room family coordinator at Skiff Medical Center for many years.

Mr. Long was the director of the Jasper County Veterans' Affairs Office for more than 30 years, manager of the Jasper County chapter of the American Red Cross for 10 years, director of Jasper County Disaster Services for four years, project manager of the Jasper County Congregate Meals Program for eight years and was a Newton City Council member for five years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Newton, Lodge No. 59 A.F./A.M., Moose Lodge, American Legion Post 111 and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1655.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Angela Jo Backman of Apple Valley, Calif., and many nieces and nephews and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son and a sister.
