PAUL KRUMM BECOMES 3RD VICTIM OF DAY
Paul KrummA twisted mass of metal was left at a rural intersection northwest of Grinnell Wednesday in the grim aftermath of a violent two-car collision which claimed the life of a rural Grinnell man.
============================================
SUCCUMBS TO INJURIESPaul Krumm, 49, of Rte 2, Grinnell, died at a local hospital about 8 p.m. Wednesday of injuries received about 4:30 p.m. that same day. Krumm, alone in his 1958 model Chevrolet, was driving north on the road past the Iowa Southern Utilities substation and was crossing the extension of 11th Avenue when the accident occurred.
MET AT INTERSECTION
Heading west on the 11th Avenue extension and reaching the intersection at the same moment was Ron Anderson, 18, of Rte 2, Kellogg. Anderson was accompanies by Gary Boliver, also of Rte. 2, Kellogg.
The 1957 Buick driven by Anderson struck the Krumm car exactly at the centerpost on the right hand side, smashing the entire right side through the interior of the vehicle to a distance of only about 18 inches from the left side.
80 FEET INTO DITCH
The two cars, apparently locked together in the twisted wreckage, then plunged across the intersection and came to rest in the northwest ditch about 80 feet from the point of impact.
Highway Patrolman John Flannery and Grinnell Police Chief Wiley Taylor were on the scene in just a matter of minutes. Sheriff William Welsh, on official business in eastern Poweshiek County, was also summoned and arrived a short time later. An ambulance was also dispatched and Krumm was rushed to a hospital here.
Anderson and Boliver, although both badly shaken, escaped with only minor cuts and bruises. Both, however, were taken to a hospital for treatment.
GHS STUDENTS
Anderson and Boliver are students at Grinnell high school. Both cars were completely demolished.
Investigating officers said that speed was probably a contributing factor in the fatal crash. There are no stop sighs at the intersection. The Anderson vehicle had the directional right-of-way.
FUNERAL SERVICES
Funeral services for Krumm will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Newburg Congregational church. Burial will be in Westfield cemetery. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home.
