John J. Kelly, 74, of Newton died of complications of abdominal surgery Sunday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. The body was cremated, and memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial of the cremains will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Newton at a later date.
Mr. Kelly had lived in Newton all of his life. He was a retired custodian with the Newton schools and had formerly owned and operated Kelly Flooring. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Iowa State University Extension Master Gardeners. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille; two sons, Jim of Newton and Paul of Mitchellville; a daughter, LouAnn Kelly of Bloomington, Minn.; and a sister, Anne E. Tratchel of Newton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jasper County Conservation Board.

Kelly, John J.John J. Kelly, 74, of 941 Highway F 36 W. died from complications following abdominal surgery Sunday, Jan. 13, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial services will be Wednesday at l:30 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Father Phil Cardenzana, pastoral vicar of Sacred Hearth Catholic Church in Newton, officiating. The body has been cremated. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in rural Newton. Friends may call today at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. where family will be available. Memorials will be accepted to the Jasper County Conservation Board and may be left at the funeral home.
The son of James J. and Ethel L. Eckles Kelly, he was born July 13, 1927, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School In 1945. On Sept. 16, 1950, he married E. Lucille Smith. Mr. Kelly owned and operated Kelly Flooring for 25 years and then went to work as a custodian for the Newton Community School District, retiring in 1989. He sensed in the United States Navy during World War II and enjoyed fishing, working in his flower and vegetable gardens and he enjoyed woodworking of all types. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Master Gardners.
Survivors include his wife, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jim Kelly and fiancé Cindy Sterk, both of Newton and Paul and Sandy Kelly of Mitchellville, a daughter, Lou Ann Kelly of Bloomington, Minn., a sister and brother-in-law, Anne E. and Don V. Tratchel of Newton, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son and a sister.
