John George Shehan
October 3, 1928 ~ December 3, 2019 (age 91)

John George Shehan, 91, of Newton died on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Park Centre in Newton. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 11, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, December 10, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League or the blessing box at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church may be left at the funeral home.

John, the son of George and Gertrude (Scott) Shehan, was born on October 3, 1928 in rural Moravia. He grew up in rural Moravia and attended country school in Moravia. At 18, John started working for Maytag and shortly after was enlisted in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany. After his discharge, John continued working for Maytag for 36 years. In 1952, he married Vesta Newman in Albia. They would later make their home in Newton, raising their three girls, Nancy, Debbie, and Diane. John served on the Vestry for St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Newton and was a member of the UAW local 997. He enjoyed baking pies, gardening, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his dog Pixie. Most of all, his favorite thing to do was spend time with his family.

John is survived by his children, Nancy (Dale) Henderson of Newton, Debbie (Bruce) Burns of Newton, and Diane Danley of Newton; his grandchildren, Jason (Amy) Burns of Omaha, Nebraska, Justin (Emily) Burns of Knoxville, Megan (Jeff) Danley of Newton, Heather (Jason) Ripke of Adel, Jeff Henderson (Whitney Wilcox) of Grinnell, Josh Henderson (Carlos Lopez) of Irvine, California, and Makia Henderson (Jeff Calmer) of Des Moines; his sister, Irene Summers of Albia, and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vesta; and sisters, Inez Kline and Ellen Summers. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 03 Dec 2019.
