Kartchner, Mrs. Nate (Laura Jane Haven)

Had Been In Failing Health For Over Two Years: Funeral Services Held Tuesday.

Mrs. Nate Kartchner, 80, died Sunday at a Newton nursing home after two years of invalidism. A stroke suffered last week was more than her frail strength could stand and from which she failed to recover.

Laura Jane Kartchner was born into the home of her parent Henry and Lucinda Haven on their farm east of Colfax on March 26, 1866. She was raised on the farm and spent most of her life there.

When she was about eighteen years of age she was married John Webster of Colfax. To this union were born Gladys Ackley of Colfax, Minnie Holden and Myrtle Good of Reasnor and Oscar Webster of Newton. In 1922 she was separated from John Webster and in 1927 married Nate Kartchner of Colfax.

Rather late in life she became a member of the Baptist Church.

Her home had been with her daughter, Mrs. Ackley, who cared for her mother. Mrs. Kartchner became largely confined to her bed about two years ago. Last fall, due to an injury sustained by Mrs. Ackley that made it unable for her to care for her mother, Mrs. Kartchner was removed to Mrs. Osten's Nursing Home in Newton. Having suffered a stroke last week she passed away Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at the age of eighty years.

Surviving are the three daughters, one son, two grandchildren, three great grandchildren and her husband.

The crowning achievement of her life was simply hard work.

Funeral services were held from the Cutter-Hartnett Funeral Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Wilmer Leeds, pastor of the Christian Church officiating.

Music was provided by Mrs. Earl Plummer and Mrs. Floyd Hulse.

Pall bearers were Tom O'Connor, Vern Taylor, Floyd Brown, Wesley Good, Oscar Van Elsen and Roy Clement. Interment was in the Colfax cemetery.
