Death of an Aged Pioneer

Jeffries, Salem

Salem Jeffries, for over forty-seven years a resident of Jasper County, died at his home in Ira last Friday evening, aged nearly seventy-eight years. Mr. Jeffries has been afflicted for many months, and his death was not unexpected. He was prominent in the early history of Jasper County and was always highly esteemed by everybody on account of his upright character and honest, sturdy manhood. He represented Jasper County in the lower house of the Iowa Legislature for four years and has at different times occupied places of trust at the hands of his fellow citizens. He was a good man always and the influence of his life work will live forever.

Salem Jeffries was born in Jennings County, Ind., May 15, 1822. When a small boy, with his parents he moved to Rush County and afterward to Kosciusko County of the same state, where he grew to manhood, July 19, 1843, he was married to Jane Edgar. To them were born two children, Andrew E. and Margaret J.

April 12, 1849, he was married to Eliza Ann Tramel and in 1852 moved with his family to Jasper County, Iowa, where he has since resided. Nine children were born to them, four of whom, Elizabeth, Mary, William and Robert, died when small. His aged companion and five children survive him: Andrew E., near Ira, Mrs. Jennie Henderson of Harrison, Idaho, Hiram A. of Ira, Jos. A. of Casselton, N. Dak, and Carrie L. who remains at home. All were with him at the time of his death except Mrs. Henderson and Joseph A. The funeral was held on Sunday at Union Chapel, conducted by the pastor of the Christian Church of Baxter, a large concourse of friends being present.

Salem Jeffries died at his home near Ira on February 2, 1900.

He was born May 15, 1820 and came to Iowa when a young man.

He leaves a wife and three sons.
