Obituary

Hews, Sally M. (Efnor)

Sally M. Efnor was born in Schenectady, Duchess County, N.Y., May 13, 1806, and died February 2, 1895, aged 88 years, 8 months and 20 days. She was married to James Hews, September 30, 1832, in Saratoga, N. Y., who preceded her to the Spirit land twenty years ago.

To them were born eight children, five boys and three girls, four of whom survive her, viz - John Hews, Mrs. M. V. Saunders, George Hews, and Mrs. Sarah Ann Snodgrass.

In February 1838, she with her husband moved to Fulton County, Illinois, by wagon, and lived there until May 1853, when they moved to Jasper County, Iowa.

In her early married life she joined the Methodist Church, of which she was a faithful member for many years. In 1852 she joined the Christian Church and held to that faith till the hour of her death.

Since her husband's death she made her home for the most part with her daughter, Mrs. Saunders. Last July she came to her son, Mr. George Hews, where she peacefully passed away. During her last illness she was lovingly and tenderly cared for by those whom she had nursed and reared to manhood and womanhood. It was a great joy to her to have her dear ones around her, and many times she expressed by words and looks the loving acts they did for her.

With Mother Hews a beautiful life has passed beyond. Nothing was ever too hard for her to do when she could relieve anyone's suffering. As we looked upon her calm, peaceful face, how these words came to us. "Thou shall come to the grave in a full age, like as a chock of corn cometh in, in his season."

The funeral was held at the McKinney schoolhouse, February 3rd, at one o'clock. A large congregation of her old friends and neighbors gathered to pay their last respects to one that had lived among them so many years. After a short but impressive sermon by Rev. Martin, pastor of the Christian Church in Newton, she was laid to rest by the side of her husband in Hewitt Cemetery.

The children desire to thank the many kind friends and neighbors who so willingly assisted during the last illness and death of our mother. Also the neighbors at her old home, for the thoughtful kindness shown by them.
