Helphrey, Tilse Ann Marshall

Mrs. Lewis S. Helphrey, 77, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Allen Moore, Saturday where she had been ill since suffering a stroke and heart attack on Thursday morning. Funeral services will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with the Rev. George Def. Fisher in charge. Interment will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.

Tilsie Ann Marshall, daughter of Emery and Mary Marshall, was born Dec. 24, 1861 at New Lexington, Perry Co., Ohio. She was born and lived in a log cabin there and came to Jasper Co. in 1875. She was united in marriage to Lewis S. Helphrey on April 28, 1881 and moved on a farm 4 ½ miles southwest of Newton. They resided there for 52 years until Mr. Helphrey’s death in 1933. A son, Earl M., also died in 1933.

She is survived by a son, Percy Ray and a daughter, Mrs. Allen Moore, both of Newton, two sisters, Mrs. George Brock of Prairie City and Mrs. Sarah Hickman of Newton and two brothers, S. S. Marshall and C.O. Marshall, both of Newton. She is also survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A member of the Palo Alto Grange and Three Quarter Century Club of The Newton Daily News and Jasper County Record, she also attended the Presbyterian Church. ~ The Newton Daily News Feb. 6, 1939
