Mrs. Helphrey Dies Tuesday; Rites Friday

Mrs. J.B. Helphrey, 71, longtime Newton resident, died at 6:25 Tuesday evening in the University hospital in Iowa City, where she had been a patient for the past ten weeks.

Sarah A. Helphrey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Egger, was born Dec. 7, 1876 at Durant, Ia.

Mrs. Helphrey was an active member of the Methodist church, Rebekah lodge and the W.R.C. lodge. She was preceded in death by two children, one in infancy and one at the age of five, by a previous marriage and her parents, one sister, Mrs. Sarah Nichols, and three brothers, William, Henry and Joseph Egger.

She is survived by her husband, whom she married Oct. 8, 1919, one sister, Mrs. E.P. Grant, and two brothers, John Egger of Newton and George of Ava, Mo.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Toland Funeral home at 2 p.m. Friday with Rev. Edwin A. Briggs, pastor of the Methodist church, in charge. Burial will be in the Newton Union cemetery. ~ The Newton Daily News June 18, 1947
