Mr. Lewis Helphrey was born in Licking County, Ohio, Dec. 1, 1822, died 10 p.m., Jan. 16,1895, aged 73 years, 1 month, and 16 days. The early part of his life was spent with his parents in the county in which he was born. On the 22nd of March, 1849, he was married to Ann Maria Koontz.

In the fall of 1853, with his wife and children, he moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where they spent one year. In 1855, they moved to Newton and the fall of the same year moved onto their farm, where they since resided. For several years he has been a great sufferer, having had five paralytic strokes, the last of which proved fatal.

In 1873 he was converted and joined the Christian Church, of which he has since been a member, always living a faithful and devoted life. He bore his sickness without complaint, being reconciled to the end that was to come sooner or later. September 15, 1894, his wife and companion passed away to the glories above where he has now gone to meet her. He leaves six children to mourn his departure, three boys and three girls. Their loss is eternal gain. ~ The Newton Herald Jan. 25, 1895
