Hassig, Arthur O.

Arthur O. Hassig, 78, of 306 E. 26th St. S. died of cancer Monday, Dec. 3, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Newton with the Rev. Syd McCrorey, former pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home where family will be available from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in his name or to the Hospice of Jasper County.

The son of Clyde and Julia Fleming Hassig, he was born Feb. 12, 1923, In Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School. On Feb. 1, 1947, he married Ona Stark in Newton.

Mr. Hassig served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a fire fighter, E.A.T. crew, for the City of Newton, retiring in 1974. He was a volunteer driver for cancer patients to go to doctor's appointments. He also was a member of the First Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his wife, a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Shirleen of Newton, a daughter, Dran (Mrs. Stan) Burt of Newton, and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother and sister.
