Andy Engle, Pioneer In County, Dies Death Comes at the Age of 92; Services To Be Tuesday

Andrew Engle, 92 year old pioneer Jasper county resident, succumber at the home of his son, Percy Engle in Des Moines, Sunday evening at 8 o'clock. Mr. Engle has made his home with his son, Fred, southwest of Newton, before going to Des Moines to spend the winter with Percy. He had been in failing health about three weeks and had not been considered serious until last Thursday.

He was born Nov. 19, 1851 at Findley, Ohio, and came to Jasper county in 1869.

He was married to Carrie Davidson of Baxter in June, 1881, who preceeded him in death 56 years ago. He then married Maley Verry [Mary Berry] of New York. She preceded him in death in 1931. Two children preceded him in death.

He is survived by three sons, James Engle and Fred Engle, of Newton, and Percy Engle, of Des Moines, 13 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held at the Murdoch Funeral home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Clyde McDonald, of Des Moines, officiating.

Ingterment will be in the Sugar Grove cemetery. ~ Newton Daily News, February 7, 1944

Funeral Services Held For Andy Engle Tuesday

The funeral services for Andrew Engle, who succumbed at the home of his son in Des Moines Sunday, were held at the Murdoch Funeral home Tuesday at 2:00 o'clock, with the Rev. Clyde McDonald, of Des Moines, in charge.

Mrs. Alice Rodgers sang, "Shall We Gather At the River?" and "Jesus, Saviour Pilot Me," accompanied by Mrs. R. L. Jackson.

Mrs. John Hitchler and Mrs. Dale Emmack were in charge of the flowers.

Pallbearers were John Healy, Pat Healy, Homer Clement, Tim Kating, John Hitchler and Elmer Lind.

Interment was in Sugar Grove cemetery. ~ The Newton Daily News, Feb 11, 1944.
