Rites Today for Mrs. Horswell, Valeria Resident
Colfax, IA – Funeral rites for Mrs. Maria Horswell, a resident of southeast of Valeria, were to be conducted this afternoon at her home by the Rev. Wilmar Doughty of Colfax. Mrs. Horswell died Saturday afternoon. Interment will be in Sams cemetery northeast of Valeria.
She was the widow of John Horswell who died in 1933. She had spent most of her life in the Valeria neighborhood and her husband was a lifetime farmer there.

Colfax – Maria Bellamy was born in Oakhampton, England on July 15, 1845. She was the daughter of John and Grace Bellamy.
She became the wife of John Horswell, December 25, 1871. To this union five children were born, three of whom preceded her in death.
She came to this country in 1852, residing at Angus, Ia., for five years, then she moved to near Valeria where she spent the remainder of her life.
She leaves to mourn her loss a daughter, Anna and a son John, both at home, besides a host of neighbors and friends.
Mrs. Horswell died at her home Sunday November 17, 1940, following a short illness. Funeral services were conducted at the home on Tuesday afternoon with Rev. W. M. Doughty in charge.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Earl Plummer and Mrs. George Rinker with Mrs. Howard Williams accompanist.
Pallbearers were Dave Borts, Frank Warrick, Tom Warrick, Jack Byers, Fay Pierce and Dave Donaldson.
Interment was at Sams Cemetery.
