Services Held For Laura I. Bailey
Funeral services for Laura I. Bailey, 93, longtime Colfax resident, were held Monday, Oct. 5, at the United Methodist Church in Colfax. The Rev. Jim Pemble conducted the services. Burial was in the Sams Cemetery near Mingo.
Walters-Coburn Funeral Home of Colfax handled the arrangements.
Soloist was Mable Kaldenberg; organist, Mrs. Frank B. Evans.
Casket bearers were Kenneth Berkey, Earl Bell, James Pieart and Bobby Davidson.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, 7 brothers and 4 sisters.
The daughter of James E. and Lucy Jane Dempsey Bailey, she was born February 2, 1888, near Mingo, Iowa and entered into rest at the Clearview Manor in Prairie City October 2, 1981.
Educated through the eighth grade in rural Jasper County schools, Miss Bailey received her high school education at the Simpson Academy in Indianola. She taught in the rural schools in Jasper County for a few years. She then attended college in Cedar Falls, receiving her BA degree in 1921. Later, in 1929, she received her MA in education and history from the University of Iowa. Miss Bailey taught school in Tama for 3 years, Mingo, one year and in Manchester for 13 years.
She then returned to Colfax to make her home and to do some private tutoring.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and several women’s groups at the church.
