The Newton Journal July 17, 1895
Death of Robert Dixon
Dixon, Robert

Died at the residence of this daughter, Mrs. Lou J. Smith, in Chicago, Monday evening, July 15, 1895, of cancer of the stomach, Robert Dixon, aged 81 years. Mr. Dixon was one of the oldest settlers in Newton, coming here is 1857, bought property, bringing his family in May 1858. He was also among the oldest members of the Newton Methodist church, and of the Newton Lodge of Masons. For many years he was one of the active, efficient workers of the Methodist church, and contributed largely to its growth and influence.

His aged wife died in Newton several years ago, previous to which he had always resided in Newton. Since her death, he has made his home with his children,-- four of whom were born of this marriage, -- John Dixon, now of San Bernardino, California; James Dixon, of Bowling Green, Missouri; Mrs. Lou J. Smith, of Chicago; and Mrs. F.T. Campbell, of Des Moines. Mrs. A.K. Brown, of Chicago, was an adopted daughter, but always looked upon as one of the family.

Mr. Dixon came to Newton so early that he has seen Newton grow from a hamlet to a thriving little city, -- has seen an open, boundless prairie converted into fruitful farms seen a wilderness changed to a land of plenty, and in all these changes he has done his full share in producing them. Few men in Jasper County was better known few men whose death will be more mourned.

His body reached Newton this morning, and the funeral will take place at 6:15, this evening, at the M.E. church. The friends will be allowed to view the body from 3 to 5, this afternoon. Rev. E.C. Brooks officiating.

(We regret that we have not more facts in regard to his life and history, but in the absence of his friends, we have not been able to procure them in time for our paper this morning.)
