Last Friday, Mike Sporer, a miner at No. 8 near Seevers, was killed by falling slate. The verdict of the coroner’s jury was that he came to his death by no accident caused by the company, but by his own carelessness. He leaves a wife and three children.
The Newton (IA) Daily News, Monday, May 25, 1908

Mr. Mike Sporer, aged 31 years, an Austrian, met with sudden death on Friday morning, May 22, by a fall of slate. There is no blame attached to anyone. He was a timber man and was always acknowledged to be a steady man at work. He has been in the country six years and has worked at Seevers over four years. He leaves a wife and three small children and three brothers, one of them arrived late on Friday night from Illinois.
The funeral took place on Sunday morning, 24th, at 9:00 o’clock a.m., arrangements having been made for a special train to run from Colfax to Seevers. The miners assembled in their hall and marched to the residence of the deceased brother. There was quite a large number of able-bodied men who followed the remains to the crossing, where the train would stop. Quite a number went to Colfax. Mr. Sporer belonged to a society of his own people, which marched two abreast ahead of the corpse. The wife of the deceased could not attend the funeral on account of being so sick.
