Death of Mrs. Capt. Cozad
Cozad, Sarah Ann (Scott)

Mrs. F. W. Cozad died at her home in this city, yesterday afternoon, Oct. 25th, about 3 o’clock, her disease being erysipelas and blood poison.

There is scarcely a heart in Newton or vicinity that will not be touched with a feeling of profound sorrow when they learn of the death of this good woman. It came so suddenly many of her friends not being aware even of her illness before the sad word was given them of her death. On Wednesday of last week just a week before she made a number of calls upon friends, among them her new pastor and his wife, expecting the next morning to leave for Jefferson for a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Geo. B. McCully, and seemed in usual health. The next morning, she was feeling badly and did not venture on her trip, but it was two or three days before her condition became alarming to her friends; then she grew rapidly worse until the end came yesterday afternoon.

Sarah Ann Scott was born in Richmond, Va., Aug. 20, 1833. When but 10 years of age her mother died, and she was adopted into the family of her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Price Parcels, a year later moving with them to Cincinnati, Ohio, where in 1856 she was united in marriage to Felix W. Cozad, and come with him to Newton where he had already established himself in business. Our older citizens will well remember when she arrived here, a happy, beautiful bride, and how almost immediately she won a warm place in every heart by her winsome manners and sweet disposition. Three children were born to them, the eldest, Hattie, died in 1865, - Charles Cozad of Prairie City and Mrs. Ida McCully were with her in her last illness.

She had been a member of the M. E. Church since she was twelve years of age, was always devotedly attached to her church, and her pure Christian character was always demonstrated by her daily life. She was a friend to everybody and everybody was her friend.

The funeral services will be held in the M. E. Church, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by Rev. J. C. Willits.
