Coughlan, Charles Henry

Chas. H. Coughlan, one of the oldest and best citizens of Jasper County died at his home near Mingo, last Sunday, as the result of a large carbuncle on the back of his neck and head. His suffering for several weeks was intense, and the skill of the best physicians filed to give him any relief. He will be greatly missed in the community where he has long lived, and his death has caused universal sorrow.

The funeral services were held at Union Chapel, in Clear Creek Township, Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Dr. English of the Colfax M. E. Church, assisted by Revs. Lampman and Blood. The services were largely attended notwithstanding the extreme cold weather. The services at the cemetery were in charge of the Masonic Order, led by O. N. Wagley of this city; Messrs. Beriah Battles, Thos. Hughes and D. R. Tripp being also present from the Newton Lodge.

Died, Sunday morning, January 30th, 1898, Charles Henry Coughlan, aged 68 years, 3 months, 12 days. He was born in Vermont, Oct. 18, 1828. When a young man moved to Ohio where he lived several years. Coming to Iowa in 1854, he settled on the farm on which he died. He was married to Sarah Jane Maxfield in Columbus, Ohio in 1856. To them were born five sons, two of which died in childhood and one, Prof. H. I. Coughlan died in Iowa City in March 1896. The two remaining sons, Dr. W. J. of Monticello, and J. L., his wife and a brother in Des Moines, are left, with a host of friends and neighbors to mourn his death. He was a member of the M. E. Church for over forty years. A man who was respected by all who knew him. The funeral was held at Union Chapel Tuesday, Feb. 1, 1898, conducted by Rev. English, of Colfax, and Rev. Lampman. Rev. English preaching an able sermon from Rom. 6:23, The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. The body was interred in the cemetery adjoining the Chapel. The Masonic brethren of Colfax lodge, of which he was a member, held a short service at the cemetery.
