Fred De Reus, 91, Former Jasper Resident, Dies
Rock Island, Ill. – Funeral services for Fred De Reus, 91, of St. Anthony Care Center in Rock Island, Ill., a former Newton resident, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Hodgson Funeral Chapel in Rock Island. Burial will be in the Rock Island Cemetery.
He died Thursday at the Care Center.
Survivors are his wife, Myrtle; two sons, Ralph of Davenport, and Francis of Lakeland, Fla.; nine grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Mattie Lint of Newton; a brother, William E. De Reus of Newton; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son in infancy, a sister in infancy and a brother.
Mr. De Reus, who at the age of 18 had been named a master baker, had worked in a number of local bakeries. He later owned and operated a baker in Rock Island until flour-dust induced poor health and he was compelled to retire.
Mr. De Reus, while in Newton, was active in a number of vocal music organizations, including the choir of the First Lutheran Church.
In Rock Island he was a charter member of the Barbershop Singers Organization and a member of its quartet and was active in choirs in the Quad Cities.
The son of Arie A. and Clara Cushman De Reus, he was born Nov. 28, 1890 in Otley and had resided in Otley and Galesburg communities before moving to Newton in 1902. He was educated in rural and Newton Schools.
He was married to Myrtle Robison July 17, 1911 in Baxter. The De Reuses celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 1981 at the Center, where Mrs. De Reus continues to reside.
