Earnest Griggs Services Tuesday; Dies on Thursday
Newton – Funeral services for Ernest C. Griggs, 71, of 416 E. 4th St. S., a resident of Newton since 946, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wallace Funeral home.
The Rev. Stan Wierson, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial ws in the Newton Union Cemetery.
He died Thursday at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Survivors are his wife, Mamie Murl; two daughters, Mrs. Max (Elaine) Betson of Des Moines and Mrs. Virgil (Ella) Oswalt of Monroe; 10 grandchildren; three brothers, Grady Griggs of Pulaski, Tenn., Clyde Griggs of Newton and Malloy Griggs of Prospect, Tenn.; and a sister, Clara Griggs of Prospect, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandchildren.
Mr. Griggs was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Disabled American Veterans, United Auto Workers and Jasper County Senior Citizens.
He served in the armed services during World War II.
Mr. Griggs, a retired Maytag Co. employee, had been employed in the company’s grey iron foundry and rubber departments.
The son of William Newton and Ella May Sulcer Griggs, he was born April 15, 1911 in Prospect, Tenn., and attended Tennessee schools.
He was married to Mamie Murl Pickett April 20, 1946 in Unionville, Mo.
