Samuel Wesley Caster was born June 20, 1829 in Montgomery County, Indiana, died at Lynnville, Iowa April 4, at 2 a.m., 1908, aged, 78 years, 6 months and 14 days. At the age of 22 he was married to Rebecca A. Wethers, August 12, 1851, in Montgomery County, Indiana. In 1854 they moved to Iowa, and with the exception of four years in Nebraska, four years in Kansas and two in Missouri, they have resided in Jasper County, Iowa.
To this union were born ten children, five sons and five daughters, all of whom survive Father Caster but Laura J., the eldest Daughter, who died in infancy.
Samuel W. Caster was converted about the year, 1858 in a revival meeting held in Granville, Mahaska County, Iowa. Soon after conversion he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and remained a faithful member till death. Many times during his last illness he would praise his Redeemer for his saving grace, and when brethren and friends would call to see him, he did not hesitate to ask them to pray with him, and twice he asked the pastor to sing one of his favorite hymns and read the Bible and pray with him. When he could no longer speak, he would raise his hand in a waving position in testimony of his Savior’s love. Among his last words were, “I’m ready and waiting.”
Funeral services were held at New Salem M. E. Church, Sunday, April 5, at 2:30 p.m. 1908. He is held in loving remembrance and was one of the charter members and also one of the main promoters in the building of said church. Text, 2 Cor. 5:1; Heb. 11:10. Services conducted by pastor, ___ [rest is missing].
