The Linder Funeral
The funeral for James Linder and his son, Arthur, was held on last Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Congregational church in Baxter and was conducted by Rev. E. F. Gillis, of this city. The church was crowded to overflowing. In Mr. Gillis’ sermon he emphasized the fact that if the “booze” element of Newton and Baxter had let Mr. Linder alone, he would never have committed such terrible crimes and that those who have encouraged him to drink will have to answer for their share of the crimes. The interment was made in the Baxter cemetery, both bodies being buried in the same grave.
Mrs. Linder is recovering from the wounds which she received and is having the best of care at the home of her mother, Mrs. Hester Trussel, in Baxter. Of course she was not able to be at the funeral. The bodies were kept at the home in the country until the time of the funeral and she did not even see them. She was told what she did not know about the shooting and bears up very bravely. During the funeral the doctor was with her and nearly all of that day. He says that the prospects are very good for her recovery.
Mrs. G. Carrier and Mrs. Atwell Spencer, two of Mrs. Linder’s Newton friends, went to Baxter the day after the shooting and remained until Sunday afternoon. They say that Mrs. Linder was conscious all the time and asked them about people here. The report that her ear was shot off is not true.
The two little boys are staying with Mrs. Linder’s sister, Mrs. Chas. Logsdon, in the country near Baxter. Mrs. Linder hopes to get a home near her mother in Baxter and live there as soon as she is well enough.
It is a very strange coincident that on Wednesday of last week a double funeral, that of James McKenzie and son William, was held in the Congregational church in Baxter and on Saturday another double funeral, that of Mr. Linder and son, was held in the same church – two double funerals in the same church within a week.
