Duane W. Sellers, 90, of Monroe, left this world Feb. 25, 2019, at Park Centre in Newton, with his loving family by his side.
Duane was the son of Harold M. and Mabel M. (Wood) Sellers. He was born Jan. 25, 1929, in Monroe. Duane graduated from Monroe High School in 1947. Following graduation he and three of his friends went to work in Idaho. Upon his return from Idaho, Duane married the love of his life, Wilma A. Mullins, Oct. 23, 1948, in Monroe. Shortly before marriage Duane was hired by the Maytag Company and remained there for 30 years as a supervisor until he took an early retirement at the age of 48.
Following retirement, Duane continued to keep himself busy by working at Lake Red Rock, Corps of Engineers and Cutty’s Resort in Des Moines. In his spare time, Duane enjoyed camping, fishing, boating and hunting, especially when it involved his two boys, Bill and Nick. Duane enjoyed visiting with friends, sharing “tales of the past” and discussing current events. Duane and Wilma did a considerable amount of traveling, spending their winters in Florida, Texas or Arizona. In 1987, they bought a mobile home in Apache Junction, Ariz., and lived there during the winters until April of 2002. While in Arizona, Duane worked at Viewpoint RV Resort and Roadhaven Homeowners Association doing maintenance work. Duane was a lifetime member of Newton Lodge No. 1270, B.P.O. Elks and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 923 in Newton.
Duane was the proud father of two sons, William (Bill) Sellers and Nicholas (Nick) Sellers. He was especially proud when he became the grandfather of three grandchildren, Marci (Sellers) McIlrath, Harold (Uri) Sellers and Caleb Sellers. His pride in his grandchildren continued, as he was blessed with three great-granddaughters, Reagan and Rayne McIlrath of Laurel and Stella Sellers of Weatherby Lake, Mo.
Duane is survived by his loving wife of 70 years; his brother, Jerry Sellers of Altoona; his son, Bill (Mary) Sellers of Monroe; two grandchildren, Marci (Sam) McIlrath of Laurel and Caleb (Bobbi) Sellers of Weatherby Lake; three great-granddaughters, Reagan and Rayne McIlrath of Laurel and Stella Sellers of Weatherby Lake; his nephews, Chris (Kim) Sellers of Brooklyn and Greg (Sherry) Sellers of Bella Vista, Ariz.; as well as all of his great-nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Duane is preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law; his son, Nick Sellers; his grandson, Uri Sellers; and his sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Sellers.
Duane’s entire family would like to thank the Park Centre staff for all their hard work, compassion and dedication to Duane (and Wilma), and give a special thanks and recognition to Bre James.
A funeral service will begin at noon Friday, March 8 at the Monroe Presbyterian Church. A public visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Uri Sellers Memorial Foundation or charity of your choice. For condolences visit mitchellfh.com or call 641-844-1234.
