NORFOLK, Neb. -- Daniel R. Ankeney, 46, of Norfolk, Neb., formerly of Newton, died of cancer Sunday, May 23, at his home.

Funeral services were held today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk, Neb., with the Rev. Dermot Dun officiating. Burial was at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk. Howser-Fillmer Mortuary in Norfolk, Neb., handled arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life.

The son of Robert and Mabel (Bunnell) Ankeney, he was born Oct. 23, 1957, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1976 and was the assistant manager of Earl May Garden Center in Newton. He was transferred to Boone as assistant manager for Earl May in 1977. In 1983 he was promoted to manager for Earl May in Cherokee. On Feb. 21, 1987, he married Cheryl Lynn Heyn in Bancroft. He was promoted to manager of Earl May in Norfolk, Neb., in 1987. He went into business as a franchise owner and manager for Management Recruiters International. In 2000, he began working with Basic Financial Solutions and earned an insurance agent's license. He was active in slow pitch softball and played and coached for teams in Boone and Cherokee, as well as Norfolk, Neb. He served as past president of the Norfolk Softball Association. He enjoyed genealogy and was a member of the Keo-Mah Genealogical Society of Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Dave Cupples of Newton; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Marilou Ankeney of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his mother and step-father, Mabel and Eugene Daniels of Beacon; his step-mother, Berniece Ankeney of Colorado Springs, Colo.; mother-in-law and step-father-in-law, Kathleen "Fae" and Clifford Porter of Pocahontas; father-in-law and step-mother-in-law, Lawrence and Gail Heyn of Swea City; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Dean and Melanie of Indianola and Scott and Sharon of Ramseur, N.C.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
