COLFAX -- Arlene Mae Bonawitz, 80, died Wednesday, June 16, at her home in Colfax.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax with the Rev. Paul Elliot officiating. Burial will be at the Colfax Cemetery. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 2 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County or to Howard Street Christian Church.

The daughter of Ethel M. (Buck) and Ray W. Holdefer, she was born March 24, 1924, in Platte, S.D. In 1927, she and her family moved to Colfax. She graduated from Colfax High School in 1942. On April 20, 1942, she married Elbert C. Bonawitz in Lancaster, Mo. She lived in Colfax most of her life, and worked for the Maytag Company for more than 30 years. She retired as an assistant buyer in purchasing in 1975.

Mrs. Bonawitz enjoyed volunteering and took part in Christian Women's Fellowship at Howard Street Christian Church. She was also a past president of the Colfax Bowling League.

Survivors include two sisters-in-law: Helen Holdefer of Colfax; and Betty Bonawitz of Newton; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Louise Bonawitz of Mankato, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother, Howard W. Holdefer. ~ Newton Daily News, Thursday, June 17, 2004
