David McManus Severs, 54, of 518 First Ave. E. died Friday, July 9, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Ernest Braida officiating. Burial will be at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, Mich.

Visitation with the family will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be held in his name or to New Beginnings in Newton.

The son of Henrietta (Deeg) and Raymond McManus Severs, he was born Oct. 31, 1949, in Detroit, Mich. He was a high school graduate and attended two years of college and earned a degree in veterinary science. He lived in Michigan until 1977 and in Cedar Rapids until 2003, when he moved to Newton. He was an auto mechanic and enjoyed music, guitars and working in his garden. He also enjoyed working on motors, especially cars.

Survivors include two sons, David of Arizona and Jeremy of Colorado; a brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Marion Severs of Farmington Hills, Mich.; three sisters, Jane Andrews of Brentwood, Tenn., Kathy Dolanski of Mason, Mich., and Mary Ann Speiser of East Lansing, Mich.; and his mother, Henrietta Severs of Birmingham, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Ann. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Monday, July 12, 2004
