Claude A. Rusk, 84, of Newton died Wednesday, July 14, at the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Roger E. Russell of Wittemberg Church in rural Newton officiating. A private family burial will be held at Wittemberg Cemetery.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A luncheon will be held at the funeral home immediately following the service. Memorials will be accepted to Wittemberg Church Memorial Fund or to Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Gail and Evalina (Bierma) Rusk, he was born Oct. 20, 1919, in Madison County. He was a 1936 graduate of Newton Senior High School. On Aug. 28, 1951, he married Merna J. Graham in Newton. He was a farmer, retailer and a real estate agent and broker. He lived in Malaka Township or Newton since 1929. He was a member of Oak Ridge Grange and had been a part of the Subordinate County and State Grange, past president and past voting member of the Jasper County Farm Bureau.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Jean Rusk of Newton, Tony and Catherine Rusk of Tijeras, N.M., Brian and Lisa Rusk of Poweshiek Township and Jon Rusk and his fiancé, Marjeanne Scheff, both of Newton; two daughters, Martha Rusk of Chicago, Ill., and Ann Hanssen of Kellogg; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Barbara Rusk of Ames, Forrest and Joan Rusk of Newton, Dale and Helene Rusk of Sun Lakes, Ariz., and Jim Rusk of Oregon; and a sister and brother-in-law, Deloris and Eugene Lang of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, George and Lowell Rusk. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Friday, July 16, 2004
