Phyllis D. Nelson, 78, of Newton died Wednesday, July 28, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Howard Vrankin, pastor of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newton, officiating. Burial will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Guernsey Cemetery in Guernsey.

Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home where the family will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Jasper County Congregate and Home Delivered Meals, Skiff Medical Center or to the Mason City Newman Catholic High School Booster Club and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Cecil L. and Louise (Grier) Phelps, she was born June 11, 1926, in Guernsey. She graduated from Guernsey High School in 1943. On March 28, 1953, she married Carroll W. "Kelly" Nelson in Nashua. She worked for J.C. Penny Co. and the Holiday Inn. She enjoyed sewing and baking. She also enjoyed watching Iowa and Iowa State basketball on television. She lived in Brooklyn for eight years prior to moving to Newton. She also lived in Cedar Rapids from 1942 to 1954.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Pat Nelson of Mason City; three daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Rowe Winecoff of Lambs Grove, Nancee and Roger Etter and Mary Ann Nelson, all of Newton; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Duane and Pat Phelps of Montezuma.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Friday, July 30, 2004
