Wanda Mackerman, 90, of Newton died Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Community Heights Alliance Education Center in Newton with the Rev. Syd McCrorey officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be accepted in her name or to Hospice of Jasper County, Community Heights Alliance Church or to Baxter Evangelical Free Church in Baxter.

The daughter of Earl and Lydia (Bordeker) Jontz, she was born Oct. 18, 1913, in Baxter. She graduated from Baxter High School in 1931. On Sept. 3, 1934, she married Don G. Mackerman in rural Newton. She was an operator for United Telephone and retired in 1976 after 20 years. She attended Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton and Baxter Evangelical Free Church. She also taught Sunday school at Wittemberg Church in rural Newton. She enjoyed shopping, playing cards, wintering in Arizona and attended gun shoots with her husband.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Donna Jackson and Michelle Savage, both of Newton; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and two sisters-in-law, Frances Jontz and Lois Mackerman, both of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Donn and one in infancy; and a brother, Max Jontz. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Wednesday, August 18, 2004
